The Cherry Blossom Festival in Southern California draws its inspiration from the National Cherry Blossom Festival that is held annually in the capital Washington DC. The celebration in Washington heralds during the start of spring and commemorates the gifting of a number of cherry trees by the Tokyo Mayor in 1927. This act signified growing US- Japan ties and the saplings were planted in West Potomac by the first lady and the wife of the Japanese ambassador. This important diplomatic event has been remembered decades afterwards by the National Cherry Blossom Festival that was first organized in 1935.
The Los Angeles Cherry Blossom Festival instead of being held only during spring has a number of satellite events that are conducted through out the year. The event is held in the Little Tokyo district of Los Angeles that is famous for its Japanese restaurants and gift shops. This ethnic district is also known for its historic buildings and unique architectural style which creates a fitting backdrop for the Cherry Blossom Festival.
The history of the district can be traced back to 1924, as Japanese migrants were drawn to this area for business as well as residential purposes. Following a Japanese economic boom in the 70s many corporations from the homeland expanded into the United States and decided to set up their offices here. Also during this period artistes were attracted to this area and converted old warehouses and shops into studios and cafes.
Held in this district steeped in history of Japanese migration to the United States, the Los Angeles Cherry Blossom Festival is about celebrating Japanese cultural values. The event usually starts off with a charity walk that raises money for a worthy cause. This year the money will be utilized for victims of the Fukushima tragedy. In addition traditional dances, music and drama will be featured in the program which runs for a few days.
