Celebrating A Spanish New Year's Eve

Celebrating A Spanish New Year's Eve

By:

Spaniards celebrate New Year's eve with their families. Although, some young Spaniards would choose to celebrate it in clubs where they would party with other young people and they are provided with plenty of cocktails and cava. Cava is Spain's version of a sparkling wine or champagne.

What makes Spain different from the rest of the world is their tradition of eating twelve grapes at the stroke of midnight. Before midnight, everyone fills up their wine glasses with cava and they have a dozen grapes on hand. When the church bells start to ring at twelve midnight to signify the start of a new year, everyone will eat a grape every time the bell tolls. They will eat one grape for each bell toll and when you have finished the grapes, it is said that you will have good luck for the rest of the year.

Even though you are not Spanish or you are miles away from Spain, you can do the same ritual in your home. Give out twelve grapes to each member of your family or friends and give them instructions on how they should be eaten. You can have your own countdown at home and have someone ring a bell to simulate the ringing of the bells in a church. If you're going to go all out on having a Spanish themed New Year's dinner party, you can cook some Spanish food and prepare tapas. Plan your own version of a Spanish New Year by having some friends and family bring potlucks feasts inspired by Spain or make your own Spanish dishes.

Instead of the usual champagne, serve Rioja wine or cava to your guests. Spanish tapas are very easy to prepare and assmeble. All you need is some bread and ingredients that you can place on top of the bread such as sausages, cured ham, vegetables like tomatoes, cheeses, and anything else that you can think of. A good sausage to add to your tapas is the Chorizo Iberico de bellota loncheado. It is a high quality Spanish sausage made from lean Iberian pork. It makes a great accompaniment to the Rioja or Cava because of its mildly salty flavour.

Turron or Spanish almond candy is a delicacy that is a staple in any feast. It is sold in huge blocks which you can cut into smaller pieces to serve to your guests. It makes a good dessert and tastes great when you pair it with coffee. This will help guests to stay awake when there are more festivities to come or for the long drive home.
