Ceiling Fan Parts Basics

By: Daniel Roshard

As much as we all would like for our ceiling fans to never wear out, we all know that is not reality. Ceiling fans do and will wear out eventually, most of us feel we want to replace something that is not working well, and in many cases this kind of feeling is justified, but in the ceiling fan case it is often not, you can easily fix a ceiling fan by replacing a part, and it is recommended that you consider this before running to get a new fan.

The largest distributors of ceiling fans are Hunter, Emerson, Fasco and Casablanca. There are various smaller companies that import under different labels. A lot of the companies will allow you to mix and match parts, to get the custom look you want. Others companies only provide pre-packaged fans.

The first step in replacing your ceiling fan part is to contact the manufacturer. If the fan is still under warranty, you may be able to have the fan fixed, usually free of charge, and this is very important to try and discover since it will save you all the costs. In general, most
Ceiling fans parts are brand specific, so it is wise to get them through the manufacturer. Since generic parts will not work for these, you can generally order the parts straight from the manufacturer’s customer service department.

Most Home Centers carry generic replacement parts. These parts can be drilled to fit many fans and fit most imported fans. Replacements for more expensive and/or American-made fans are available through lighting showrooms and fan retailers.

Another place to find parts for your ceiling fan is on the internet. Many sites are user friendly and have fast shipping with parts in stock. Just be sure to know the brand and model of your fan, so that you can order the correct part for your fan. While researching online for your ceiling fan part you should try and get all the information you can about it, since sometime it is not only shops that sell online, and you will need to know what you are getting well in advance.

If you are not sure about the installation and part replacing methods contact a professional, this is not the thing you want to start practicing your handiwork skills on, especially since the ceiling fans got electricity connected to them. An original part that is sent from the factory sometimes has a detailed explanation of installation, if you are determined to do the work yourself carefully follow the instructions and you should be fine.
