Ccna Courses -step By Step Guide For Installing A Serial Ata Hard Drive

By:

What is a SATA?
SATA or Serial ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) is a next generation, evolutionary replacement for parallel ATA storage interface. With the ease of simplified cabling and elimination of jumpers, Serial ATA drives provides enhanced reliability, system integration flexibility and much better performance as it has transfer rate of 300 mBps and lower power requirement of 250 mV .
This guide will help you understand the step by step process of installing a serial ATA drive into your computer system. Its an easy procedure.
PRECAUTIONS:
Hard drives are very fragile and can be damaged if not handled properly; therefore necessary precautions are required when handling a drive.
Hold drive only by its edges.
Drives are extremely sensitive to static electricity so it is highly recommended to ground your self and to wear a wrist wrap.
Never drop a device on to a hard surface.
Never label your drive or use stickers on its surface.
THINGS YOU WILL NEED:
SATA cable
SATA hard drive
SATA connector
INSTALLATION STEPS:
Step 1:
Before installing its important to switch off your computer system first.
Step 2:
Detach all the peripheral devices attached with your computer.
Step 3:
Remove your computer case using screw drivers if required.

Step 4:
Insert the hard drive on to the drive bay; (drive cage or tray), mount and then connect the SATA drive. Use a SATA cable and attach it to a SATA connector that is on the motherboard and also attach the cable with the hard drive.
Step 5:
Using a power cable connect your drive with the power supply.
Step 6:
Installation is now complete, replace your computer case.
Step 7:
Attach all the devices which were previously removed.
Step 8:
Switch on your computer and start the BIOS setup, select hard drive boot and then select your drive option.
Step 9:
Select save and then exit.
Now your computer will reboot after which the drive will be ready to work.
If you want to expand your available computer storage then you can easily install multiple hard drives. Serial ATA drives have no jumpers to configure as each SATA port can hold only one drive at a time, so when adding multiple drives make sure that there are extra or spare ports, you can also install SATA controller into your computer to add multiple ports. If you are adding a blank hard drive you need to boot your computer using appropriate booting method and also a new operating system for your drive.
