Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA):
ATA also commonly known as VoIP Adapter device is a hardware interface between an analog phone system and a digital network; in simple terms it is a device that converts analog signals from an analog phone system into a digital format that is acceptable when transmitting data over the internet and vice versa when receiving. ATA connects standard analog telephones to a digital telephone system (VoIP).
ATA Device Ports:
An ATA has two ports/outlets:
Internet Port: outlet for your LAN/VoIP service, it is used to connect to the internet.
Telephone Port: outlet for your standard phone; VoIP/Ethernet cable (RJ-45 jack) is connected on one end and Telephone line cable (RJ-11 jack) is connected on the other end.
You dont need software not even a computer as ATA uses VoIP protocols ( H.323, MGCP and SIP) to directly communicate with your VoIP providers service; it independently connects with your phone system. It uses Voice Codec (G.729, iLBC, G.711, GSM) to encode and decode the voice signals.
Some Important Features of ATA:
Supports VoIP Protocols: Performance of an ATA device is better when it can support number of protocols.
Calling Features: ATA device offers a wide range of calling features such as; Call Transfer, Call Forward, Caller ID and Call Waiting etc.
Power Failure tolerance: When ever the power supply is cut down an ATA will automatically switch to PSTN line. Thus your communication wont get disrupted.
3- Way Conferencing: With this feature you can easily talk to number of people at one time.
Interoperability: ATA devices are interoperable with other devices.
Voice Quality: ATA devices with DSP (Digital Signal Processing) feature provide high voice quality during the communication.
With an ATA device you dont have to worry about money when making a phone call or the extra equipment; all you will need is an ATA device, an analog phone and an internet connection.
There are two main things that you need to consider when buying an ATA adapter:
Determine the number of phones that are required, so that you can determine how many ports on an adapter you will need.
You need to consider whether or not you want keep your phone line.
There is a huge variety of ATA devices available in market these days out of which you can choose the appropriate one for yourself. Some famous ones are SIP ATAs, LinkSys ATAs and Zoom ATAs etc.
