Causes Of Male Hair Loss

Male pattern baldness is also known as androgenetic alopecia and is the most common type of hair loss in men. Men, who suffer from DHT or dihydrotestosterone which is the male hormone, mainly happens to men who are predispositioned to genetic hair loss.

You have probably heard of the old saying that men will lose their hair due to the mothers side of the family. Studies show that both parents are involved in determining if a man will lose his hair. The mothers side is a little more of an influence than the fathers side. Men will suffer from hair loss due to age, hormones and genes.

Hair loss in men as one ages depends on the individual and genetic factors. Men that lose their hair will lose it alternately at a slow rate and quick rate; not really quick all at once or very slow. As men age, the hair will decrease due to the hair follicles shrinking in width and length. At which age this happens to a man depends on ones genetic nature.

Hormones play a significant part in hair loss in men. Testosterone is the main hormone for men. A study was done on twins and found that if testosterone was removed, a man would become bald. The twin who previously was casterated had a full head of hair. The twin with the full head of hair was later injected with testosterone and his scalp began the balding process. He experienced the normal balding pattern from one side of the skull to the other side, just like his twin. The doctor wanted to conclude his study by quitting the testosterone to see if the man would regain his hair. The doctor found out that the twins hair would not come back. Testosterone will stop, slow or further hair loss but testosterone will not bring back any hair follicles that have already died.

Genes play a huge part in a cause of male baldness. Without the inherited genes of baldness, a man cannot become bald. As mentioned before, either the mother or father may pass this gene onto her or his son.
