Causes And Treatments For Seizures In Dogs

By:

Half of the problem with a pet experiencing this disorder is finding out exactly what is causing it. While epilepsy is most likely the cause, there can be many other reasons. Seizures in dogs can present for a variety of reasons including exposure to household products or contracting a virus.

Epilepsy is the largest reason for the problem to appear in canines and humans. It is a neurological disorder that is related to abnormal nerve brain tissue. This brain tissue receives an incorrect impulse which then affects voluntary muscles in the body causing them to twitch and convulse.

Genetics through research has been proven to play quite a significant role in the actual development of this disorder. In fact, it has proven a number of certain breeds are much more susceptible to develop the disorder. In order to be prepared, the following were included in that list; Collie, Beagle, Dachshund, Golden Retriever, Poodle, and German Shepherd.

Abnormal growths such as a brain tumor can not only be linked to the disorder, but are also responsible for certain types of seizures. A brain tumor may apply abnormal amounts of pressure to a specific area of the brain of the canine. This pressure can cause the disorder to result in various ways for the dog including impaired vision, and loss of coordination.

Head injuries are also extremely likely to end up causing this type of disorder. An accident that causes damage to brain tissue or damage to the cranium will most likely result in a seizure. The episode may occur once, or continue throughout the pets life.

There are a number of environmental causes that are linked to the disorder, and some of which you have probably never considered. General cleaning products, painting items, and simple household items are some of the culprits that can be related to the problem. Chocolate is a particular food that can cause serious harm to your pet, especially if they are in the category of being prone to the disorder.

Diseases and parasites can also be responsible for causing illness in canines that will result in damage causing this disorder. Canine Distemper is a very serious virus that is highly contagious and once contracted by your pet, it attacks the nervous system. This disorder may be present all throughout the disease, or only through the earlier stages.

Another disease that can result by your pet being bitten by a tick is called Lyme disease, and the most common symptom is that of arthritis, but seizures are also possible. By treating your canine with the proper medication on a regular basis this can be prevented. Medications are available online with a proper prescription from your veterinarian to treat your pets for flea and tick prevention on a monthly basis.

It is impossible to protect our pets from everything that they may face in life, but we can protect them against some very serious problems. Proper vaccinations and parasite protection can help them fight disease and this disorder. Seizures in dogs can be prevented in some cases and certainly do not have to keep your pet from living a long healthy life.
