Many people make the mistake of buying a machine with a huge hard drive and overlook the amount of RAM it comes with. Fortunately, the memory is an item that can be upgraded in both laptop and desktop computers.

When running a program it is best to think of it as being allowed to exist within a defined amount of space. When you add more memory you give it more space to move around in so it performs better. The virtual memory is a setting that allocates how much of the available RAM to give a program. By default this is usually set at a minimum and maximum amount controlled by the operating system, but it can be reset to your specification if the minimum is too low. A good rule of thumb is to set the max at one and a half times the amount of actual RAM and the minimum at anything equal to or below that number.
