Caught Speeding? What To Do Next.

By:

If you have ever been caught by a speed camera or other speed trap you will possibly be wondering what you need to do next. The area of motoring law can seem very complicated with speeding fines, speed cameras, penalties and tickets and more needing consideration.

There are several different types of speed cameras around, some are fixed and some are in-vehicle, if you are caught by one of these cameras it is possible that there may be no film in it and you will have a lucky escape although this is not always the case.

If you have been charged with a speeding offence you will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) within fourteen days of when you committed the offence. You will need to fill in the forms within twenty eight days and provide the identity of the person driving at the time. It is a requirement by law that you identify the driver. If you cannot identify the driver you may receive the points. If you work for a company with a fleet of cars you are required to keep a record of who was driving each vehicle at the time.

Summons and fixed penalty notices are received frequently by drivers. If you do not argue against them you will usually have to pay 60 and accumulate 3 points on your licence. If, however, you decide to contest it you will see your case going to court. Often you will be offered a 'speed awareness course,' rather than receiving penalty points, courses like this are intended to educate you as a driver.

Often people are interested to learn what is accepted as a defence to speeding. The best way to avoid a fine or penalty points is to not speed in the first place. Speeding is a road traffic offence and looked upon as being very serious indeed by the law.
