The printing remains the machine of choice for high-volume, expert publishing. But, as printers have better in class and performance, many jobs which used to be done by professional print shops are now done by users on local printers. The world's first computer printer was a 19th century. A virtual printer is a part of computer software whose user line and API resembles that of a printer driver, but which is not linked with a physical computer printer.

A feature of printer technology that is regularly forgotten is resistance to change: liquid ink, such as from an inkjet head, becomes engaged by the paper fibers, so documents printed with liquid ink are more hard to alter than documents printed with solid inks, which do not go in the paper surface.

There are some kinds of printing technologies:
1.Typewriter-derived printers
2.Typewriter-derived printers
3.Daisy wheel printers
4.Dot-matrix printers
5.Line printers
6.Pen-based plotters

Some different computer printers were basically computer-controllable versions of offered electric typewriters. In case, the letter form then strikes a ribbon which was pushed against the paper, printing one character at a time.

The ordinary teleprinter could easily be interfaced to the computer. Some models used a "typebox" that was located, in the X- and Y-axes, by a device and the selected letter form was strike by a hammer. Most teleprinters operated at ten characters per second.

Daisy-wheel printers operate in much the same style as a typewriter. A hammer strikes a wheel, the "daisy wheel", and each petal containing a letter shape at its tip. By revolving the daisy wheel, different characters are chosen for printing. The best letter-quality printers printed at 30 fonts per second.

In common logic many printers rely on a matrix of pixels, or dots, that jointly form the larger image. However, the term dot matrix printer is mainly used for impact printers that use a matrix of small pins to generate exact dots.
