Catching The Wedding Bouquet Moment

Catching The Wedding Bouquet Moment

By:

Anyone who has been to a traditional British wedding - or indeed anyone who has simply watched enough classic romantic comedies - will know what is meant by the "bouquet moment", and will know how much is held in store by it, and also how much comic potential it has.

This is the moment when the bride stands in front of all the single ladies present at the wedding, and throws her bouquet backwards. The superstition is that the lady who catches it will be the next person to get married.

Now, like most superstitions that involve love and marriage, the idea is that fate is the one to decide. The ladies were meant to stand demurely and, if the bouquet happened to come her way, she would reach out and catch it. The idea was never meant to be a competition, a free-for-all or a scramble, but judging by the videos that were sent into shows like "You've Been Framed" in the past, or are put on YouTube nowadays, it seems that a competition, a free-for-all and a scramble is what it has become. The effect of this can be mildly amusing when seen at a distance on a TV screen, but I imagine that seeing the actions live, and people you know well, could be quite hilarious.

Bridesmaids, in all their delicate finery suddenly turn themselves into rugby players. They will push each other, lunge quite ungraciously and even throw themselves onto the floor in order to be the one that "fate" has decided will marry next. What must the boyfriends of these girls be thinking? It is possible that they are glancing at the door, wanting to escape? All guys want to believe that they're a catch. But most men want to believe that girlfriend or future wife is also a catch, and girls who are a catch have no need to force anybody to marry them, and desperation is not a most attractive thing in a girl.

Most of the time, the players in the "bouquet moment" farce are very much aware of the ridiculousness of the situation and don't mind making fools of themselves. They don't mind making fools of themselves because everybody else will be making a fool of him or herself at some point during the celebration (perhaps it will be during the speeches, or if they don't manage to do so there, it will be on the dance floor).

So, the "bouquet moment" is just one moment in a long day of traditional comedy moments. The best weddings are traditional in the most entertaining ways, so that if the friends and family of the blissful couple are not shedding happy tears, they are laughing.
