Castle Life Was Not As Royal As You May Think

By:

Castles are usually associated with fighting fire-breathing dragons and rebellious knights. You have seen movies where people lived in castles and what it was like back in those days. There was no indoor plumbing and no electricity, and people were waited on hand and feet. The castles were very big, and they had fireplaces in every room to keep it warm. They had to get their water from outside to cook with, take a bath in, and to clean the castle. They had to cook in the fireplaces because they did not have electricity so they had to cook with the fire and cook it in a big pot.

They had to wash their clothes in the creeks or in a pot of hot water. In those days they did not have the stuff that we have today. They had to get on their hands and knees to clean anything. There were no rugs or carpets. It was all just brick. If they wanted to have something to stand on they would use fur off of animals. It was used for covers, and they also used them to wear for clothes. If they had to go to the bathroom, they would go into a bucket, and it had to be thrown outside. But as time went on, they put a room in the castles to go the bathroom, but it still had to be cleaned out.

The people had to grow their own vegetables and sell them, or they went to the city to get some for the week. The castles were very dark, so they had to use a torch or a candle to see what they were doing and where they were going. It had very big doors to get in and out of. They had to chop so much wood just to keep them warm for the winter days. We still have castles around nowadays that people live in or they are just sitting there. People say that some of those castles are hunted. They may be. They can have the spirit of the person who had live in them hundreds of years ago.

But some of the castles are falling apart, and they are left there for the history. The ones that are lived in have windows, indoor plumbing, and electricity in them now. They have a lot more stuff than they had put in them so it can be lived in.
