Cash From Your Camera Tips To Make Money From Self-publishing Postcards

By:

It has never been easier to self-publish postcards than in this new digital age. There are just so many companies waiting for your business. The great thing about it is that you no longer need to order huge quantities at high prices in order to test the water. So to seriously consider self-publishing your own postcards is no longer a big risk.

If you would like to try your hand at postcard photography then now is the time to do it. You are pretty well assured of success if you are prepared to work hard and do you homework. By putting into place these key steps youll open up the possibilities of success.

1. Do your homework

Research the market you are going to work in. Find out what there is for sale and start a collection of postcards. These will become valuable source material and give you an understanding as to what sells and where you should try to enter the market. Study them and see if a theme or common thread appears. What is the common subject of the area you are wanting to photograph? What icons or scenes dominate the postcard industry in that location? If you do your homework your entry to the market will be calculated and less of a risk.

2. Source the right printer

There are just so many self publishing companies that, because of the digital age, allow you to do limited print runs at reasonable prices. The more you order the cheaper it still gets but the minimum quantities are minimal. You can afford to try out styles and images that are unique without mortgaging the house. Get quotations from more than one and see what there total offering is. If you find the right printer your relationship could be a long and profitable one.

3. Choose the right images after doing your homework

The bottom line with any photography venture is skill and quality. If you cant shoot any better than the rest, or at least at the same standard, then you wont get anywhere in the market. By doing your research and then shooting the most appropriate scenes and icons, your chances of success are highest.

4. Source the right outlets

Its no good selling to all the little shops in the backstreets of the famous locations as they will take a long time to sell. Find outlets that are in good locations and dont already have large selections of postcards. The areas of least competition are the best. If your postcards are good and a retailer can see that they will make money then your chances of success are much higher. Good marketing will always bring good results when selling a good product.

5. Create a wide enough range

This is key to any product. If you limit your range you will limit the possibilities. If people like a particular style they will look for more of the same so create a range that is broad enough to give people choice. If you dont they will look elsewhere. With the low costs of self publication you can print less of each card and increase the range.

Selling postcards will not make you rich quickly but, if you are smart enough you can create an income that will be consistent and give you exposure as a photographer. Stick to the task and create great images and you may find that you will be able to sell to most markets. Happy shooting!
