What are important things for the locum to understand? First all, respect the support staff. The people who have been working with a patient all along understand a lot and have insights on issues of importances. Also, the locum must make an effort to make a personal connection even if he will only be filling in briefly.
This is the same for any doctor. It is especially true for OBGYNs. When a woman is having a baby she really wants to be around someone who she knows and trusts. If someone is just filling in it could make her uncomfortable and even lead to complications with the birth.
The great thing about a locum is that they can see things in a different way and they can bring new experiences with them to the table.

One job that hardly ever gets filled by a locum is a psychologist. Usually, they just cancel the appointment and the patient waits until their doctor is available. This might not always be possible, especially if someone is in a life crisis. For someone in a crisis then the locum must be compassionate, proactive, and supportive. They should behave as if this person is very dear to them and work hard to help them regain control over their thoughts and their life.

Once, a locum for a psychiatrist did not take a man seriously when he came in for help and then the man went home and committed suicide. This could have been avoided if the locum felt like the patient was his instead of just warming his seat and taking notes.

There are benefits to being a cardiologist locum- or a locum for any other doctor because they can get to see a variety of patients and illnesses that they might not encounter in their day to day work. It is possible, as a locum, to be able to do very high level operations and be involved with intriguing cases.

Locums get to meet people who they dont usually see- and that includes the staff as well as patients. I know one guy who filled in for another doctor and met a resident who worked on a different shift than him. They ended up dating for years and eventually they got married. They were very grateful that he took the extra shifts and that they got a chance to meet.

Office romances can be awkward but if a person is only there temporarily it can take a lot of stress off of things. You dont have to worry about office gossip and there isnt much of a chance of running into each other if it does not work out.

Filling in for others isnt easy, but it can have a lot of benefits.
