Caring Properly For Your Child's Baby Teeth - Dental Info For Parents

By:

Your childs baby teeth may seem like a small concern, but dental care for children is extremely important in a childs earliest years. The health of their baby teeth will directly affect the health of their adult teeth later in life, and its important to help them develop healthy habits that will carry on for the entirety of their life.

Baby teeth will start to appear between the ages of 4 and 7 months typically, and will continue to appear for the next few years. These teeth, although temporary, help your baby to chew food, learn to speak properly, and contribute to healthy jawbone formation.

As soon as the first teeth appear, you should manually clean your babys teeth with a clean washcloth or piece of gauze twice a day to remove food particles. Baby teeth should be brushed twice a day with a childs toothbrush and paste once your child reaches the age of 12 to 18 months.

You should also schedule a visit to the dentist prior to reaching 1 year of age. This will both clue you in to any problems developing early on, and allow your child to become familiar with the process of having his or her teeth examined.

Preventing cavities in baby teeth is the best way to avoid several dental concerns for children. Cavities can spread to the underlying permanent teeth if left untreated, but can be prevented through the proper dental care practices.

Other than brushing and cleaning baby teeth effectively, you should also avoid giving your child sugary juice or flavored milk to drink after 1 year of age--water and plain milk are best. Also, bottles should be eliminated by 1 year of age to prevent unnecessary wear and tear or movement of the teeth that can lead to decay and permanent damage.

Teaching your child proper dental care for his or her teeth at the earliest age possible is the best way to avoid several common dental concerns for children. Develop the best habits early, and your child will be more likely to enjoy good oral health throughout their entire life.
