Valuable possessions must be cared for or they loose their value. Oriental or Persian rugs are valuable items that with proper care will last many years and may even become family heirlooms that can be passed to family members. If you take care of a rug, it will last longer and look better in your home. These tips that follow can help owners to get the maximum wear from a rug.

Rotate your rugs on a regular basis. This helps them to wear more evenly. Rotating at least on an annual basis will keep the foot traffic wear even and balances so that the rug will last much longer.

Protect your rug from bright sunlight. Windows that allow sun to shine onto the rug should be covered with drapes or blinds to prevent fading of the rug. It is difficult to restore a rug that has been bleached by the sun.

Rugs should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner on a regular schedule. Do not wait until the rug looks dirty. If there is fringe at the edge of a rug be sure that you do not catch the strings in the beater of the vacuum cleaner.

Work quickly to remove any spills from the rug. This will prevent a stain from becoming permanent. Scoop up everything possible from the spill. Use clean dry towels or paper towels to soak up and remove as much liquid as possible. A clean towel that has been folded in quarters can be stepped on to remove any remaining moisture from the rug. The more of the spill that you can remove from the rug before adding more water, the better.

Once you have removed as much of the material as possible, begin to apply warm water to rinse any remaining stain from the rug. For resistant stains, you can add some detergent to the water. Continue to apply the solution and blot dry until the stain is gone. Do not forget to make a final rise to remove any laundry detergent from the rug. A hair drier on low or wet dry vacuum can be used to dry the rug.

Solid stains such as wax and chewing gum should be removed first with a spoon and then use the wetting and blotting method above. Dry cleaning solvent may be necessary to remove the final traces of the stain.

When the stain is caused by wine, treat first with talcum powder and then use detergent and water to remove any remaining stain.

Professional rug cleaning services will be able to give your heirloom rug a more thorough but gentle cleaning. It should be returned to you looking clean and smelling great.

If the rug is damaged, contact a professional restoration company to repair the rug. If you ignore the damage, it will only become worse and may ruin your rug.

Always store information about your rugs in a safe place. You will need to know size and country of origin for each rug. A photograph is useful in case of theft or other damage that may occur to your Persian or Oriental rugs.
