Lovely tresses of hair are envied the world over. Well maintained fluffy hair that looks lively definitely enhances the person wearing it. However, how many of us bother to take proper care of our hair? Firstly, there are different kinds of hair that would require handling in different ways. Proper maintenance of the scalp on which the hair grows is as important as hair itself. A part of hair lies beneath the scalp which is again made up of follicle, root, root sheath and sebaceous gland. The hair shaft or the cuticle that appears as beautiful or disgusting as the case may be is actually devoid of any life.

In order to have a luxuriant growth of hair on one's head, the scalp needs to be in perfect condition. A fertile ground will yield a good harvest. The scalp needs to be cleaned regularly and brushed to remove the dead skin cells and toxins released through the skin or from external hazards like chemicals, bacteria and viruses. This could provide a fertile breeding ground and result in proliferation of dandruff. Besides, there are bacteria that affect the hair itself and cause it to fall. However this cannot be misconstrued as the reason for baldness.

The gift of luxuriant and beautiful hair on a person's head or a shiny bald pate can be attributed mainly to the trait that they have inherited from their ancestors. It is almost impossible to initiate any process to make hair grow on congenitally bald head, besides the only painful option of transplanting hair uprooted from some other part of the person's body. This process has a low success rate and sometimes end in unhealed infections and a lot of money spent in vain. However, perfect tresses of enviable hair can go to ruin if not tended to properly. One other major curse that is experienced worldwide is the menace of heads being inhabited by hordes of head lice. These disgusting parasites need not be present only in unhygienic conditions. Hair that is regularly cleaned and well maintained can also be the abode for these abominable creatures that pester us and embarrass to no end. An effective anti-lice treatment should keep them at bay.

The scalp has a sebaceous gland that produces sebum which contains fatty acids. Sebum acts as a protective agent for the skin and hair and can prevent growth of unwanted microorganisms. The oily content in the sebum gives hair the much needed moisture and shine. When hair is brushed and the scalp massaged regularly, the sebum percolates into the roots of the hair and offers nourishment naturally. The perfect way to distribute this natural oil would be by brushing with a natural bristle brush. The brushing also stimulates the sebaceous gland to produce more sebum to maintain the natural sheen. As excess sweat and oil can get trapped in between the hair follicles, regular washing and shampooing ensures that the balance is well maintained. Care must be taken in choosing the right kind of shampoo depending on the texture of the hair. As shampoos do not contain any soap content they are best suited to remove the grime and dirt. Soaping of hair however, is not a very wise thing to do.

Besides the natural sheen and richness in growth, hair is colored according to one's heredity. However artificial coloring can be done by choosing a good coloring agent and a color that goes well with the face and complexion. As hair tends to grey with age the practice of dyeing hair is prevalent across the globe. A good quality hair dye cannot cause much harm, however care must be taken to protect the eyes and the skin against any allergic reactions.
