Caring For Built In Cutting Boards

By:

Caring for your Built in Cutting Board is easy once educated about the process. Maintenance of the wood is low and if kept up your board will last you for years and years.

After the installation of your Built in Cutting Board it is important to season it properly. Treat the board using a food grade mineral oil. Using a clean, dry cloth wipe a generous amount of the oil onto the wood. Allow the room temperature oil to soak into the wood, wiping off any excess after a few minutes. This process should be repeated depending on the dryness of the wood as often as once a month when the board has a dry, washed out look to it.

There are several ways of sanitizing the Built in Cutting Board .
After using the cutting board, hand-wash with warm, soapy water. Do not submerge or soak the wood, the wood will warp when dried. Another way to ward of warping is to use the entire cutting board not just the middle portion so the board wares evenly. Allow to air dry thoroughly before another treatment of the mineral oil, or excessive use. Keep in mind that for bacteria to grow they need moisture so properly drying after washing is the most important part. Keeping your board moisturized but dry is the optimum goal.

Taking a solution of one part vinegar to five parts water will thoroughly sanitize the wooden surface of the cutting board. If the wood is stained from food preparation or just needs a good scrub rub the wood with half a lemon dipped in salt. Let sit for 3 minutes and then wipe clean with a dry, clean cloth. Even a dusting of soda and allowing to sit awhile will take away any strong raw food smell such as onions.

Do not use bleach on your board. Any harsh cleaning products will hurt the natural moisture barrier of the wood, stain the board, or even disfigure the wood. Remember wood is a natural product, and is in a raw state when used as a cutting board, so only clean with things you would use on yourself.

If the Built in Cutting Board is too far gone with gouges and/or stains, sand the top of the board until only fresh wood is visible. Then treat the wooden surface of the cutting board all over again with the initial mineral oil process.
