Caring For Babies And Sleeping

By:

Babies are great, but they can take a toll on our sleep patterns. For the first three months of a baby's life, it is going to wake up periodically throughout the night for feeding and changing.

It isn't until about the age of 3 months that the baby stops its night time feedings and it is around 6 months that your baby should start to settle into a regular sleep routine. Babies need anywhere from 12 to 15 hours of sleep every day.

These 15 hours include night sleep and naps through the day. Many babies are going to comfortably conform to a nice sleep schedule that fits into your life, usually within the three month to the six month period.

However for those who don't, you may want to start some sleep training. That doesn't mean impose a curfew on your child and make him sleep.

New born children need to feed every few hours, this is normal. You should respond quickly to the baby's cries, feed and comfort him, and when he sleeps you should try to sleep.

By sleeping when your baby sleeps you are going to prevent yourself from too much sleep deprivation. Within the first two years of a child's birth parents usually lose up to 400 to 750 hours of sleep.

To start training your child to fall asleep at a set time, start bathing and feeding him routinely at night. This is going to get him relaxed, and it is going to fill his belly.

For children digestion is a process and takes most if not all of their energy. Simply feeding is going to wear your child out, and send him into a comfortable slumber.

Around three months is when the night feedings will stop. However, continue feeding your child before bed, thus indicating to the infant that it is time for sleep.

So your baby has learned to sleep on schedule, and rests through most of the night. That is great.

Enjoy this as long as you can, because after the six month mark your baby may start waking again. This could either be because he is becoming socially aware and wants company, or he is trying so hard to master new skills like sitting up that he practices in his sleep and wakes himself up.

Often when your child comes of schedule it can be confusing. Understand that being a baby is a hard thing to do.

The best thing you can do is be aware of your baby's sleep pattern and when it deters from the schedule do your best to comfort the infant. Babies will slowly need less and less sleep throughout the night, by the age of 11 months, they will only need 11-14 hours.
