The Health is defined in terms of general state of mind and body. It is not identified in terms of medical condition or sickness. It is the complete state in terms of physical, psychological and social well being.

The health indicators include the characteristics of a person, community, population or environment. These are functional criteria which define public health issues at one point of time. These indicators then allow you to make comparisons over time. The relationship of the physical environment and health can be studied using these indicators.

The job description of physician or medical doctor is to provide relief to the patient from the sufferings. The physician diagnoses the injury or diseases, and assists the patient by giving drug medication. The doctor patient relationship has always been respected and admired. It carries a special faith, which helps the patient. The knowledge of the doctor helps in diagnosis and treatment of the patient.

There are ample job opportunities for making a career in health. The major player is the physician, but with the support of the staff, the hospitals are run smoothly and effectively. Some of the employment opportunities and careers are nurses, ambulance paramedic, community worker, clinical record coder, disability support workers, community workers, child care workers, child protection worker, cardiac technicians, technicians, hospital ward clerks, massage therapist, medical physicist, pharmacy assistant, psychologists etc.

The nurses and community workers carry a lot of work required in hospital and home settings for providing care to the patients. Besides these careers, the hospital and the medical facilities employ technicians who can run various types equipments. The technicians get very busy when they are working. These technicians monitor and operate dialysis, Audiometry, anaesthetic, ECG, EEG etc.

The radiographer or the medical imaging technologist is a very popular career. The radiographer operates the medical imaging equipment e. G. X-ray, CT etc. The medical images are used for diagnostic purposes. The radiologists and other medical staff support radiographers for diagnosis.

Another important career is the pharmacy assistant who should be very effective in communication. In addition, the pharmacy assistant should be methodical person. They provide a range of services and assist in various tasks to run the system efficiently.

The physicians, surgeons and the medical staff run the hospitals and clinics efficiently. But the patients, who need care at home, are supported by the General Practitioners (GPs). These GPs visit them at their homes at night or at odd hours. They visit the nursing homes. These GPs are called Locum GPs, who fulfil the gap in medical services at after-hours. They work on weekends, holidays, thereby filling the gap, and relieving the patient pressure from the hospital emergency departments. These Locum GPs are very flexible and are capable of adapting to the new work environment every day, if required.

The health system is not supported only by the physicians and surgeons. It is the contribution of the allied support staff, which helps them to run the system efficiently, and with care.
