Cosmetology jobs are often a lot of fun. You get to meet new people and catch up with regular customers who have become like old friends. You get to work in calm environments, and perhaps you might even get to sit down for a good part of the work day as well. What's more, you get the chance to help people out by making them look as good as possible, which often boosts their confidence and the way they feel about themselves. Plus, you get to use your creativity and artistic skills, and every new face or foot (or whatever body part you're working on) is a new challenge to be met.

Cosmetologists have bright job prospects ahead of them. Many new positions should be available for years to come. Of course, before you get started in a cosmetology career you have to decide which area of specialization to focus on. You could specialize in skin care: moisturizing, washing, shaving and beautifying people's skin, and applying just the right amount of makeup to make them look youthful and glamorous. (A skincare expert is also known as an esthetician.)

Some estheticians give their clients massages and full-body treatments. You can even learn how to use lasers so you can be licensed to zap people's unwanted body hair away with one. (Lasers may soon become a big deal in the world of cosmetology and personal beauty.)

Or you could focus on fingernails and become a manicurist, or focus on toenails and become a pedicurist. Hair is a big deal in the world of cosmetologists, too. Hair stylists are always in demand, and some cosmetologists specialize in creating wigs and hairpieces that match a customer's natural hair almost exactly. Other hair care experts bleach hair, and cut, style, highlight and shampoo it as well. And education is a big part of cosmetology. Many cosmetologists have to teach their customers how to care for their hair at home, and style it at home as well.

There are other aspects to a cosmetologist's job besides working with customers. If you own your own beauty shop, you'll have to buy products-and make sure you have substitute products you can use on clients who have allergies to certain makeup. You'll have to take care of all your financial records. You'll have to oversee and manage employees, and hire new employees.

You'll also have to keep records for all of your customers, so you know which products and what techniques you've used on them in the past. You also need to keep a record of which clients are sensitive to which products. And you'll have to advertise and market your business so you can attract as many new customers as possible.

Keep in mind, too, that you may have to work long hours and weekends when you're just starting out in your career, but after a while your schedule should become a lot more manageable.
