What Are We Going to Talk About?
Testing trends and testing as a career choice
Innovation
Testing excellence
Personal excellence in testing

Software Testing: Past, Present and Future
Trends
Testing Trends (India)
Pre-boom days (early 90s)
What is testing?
Boom days (late 90s-2001)
I know what testing is but who wants to go there?
Post boom days (2001-2002)
An interesting career choice (I don't have any other job)
New-boom days (2002/2003-?)
I am proud to be a software tester

Testing Trends
In the past those who can, develop and others test
Individuals thought of testing as
A job for non-technical persons
A punishment post
A career path that would lead nowhere
Companies thought of testing as
Who needs testing?
It is so simple, anybody can do it
A separate testing team! You must be out of your mind
Testing Trends
Coming of age
Testing is recognized as a specialized skill
A necessary and continuous activity throughout SDLC
Independent V&V teams are becoming the norm
Testing is a lucrative career
Testing requires technical skills including coding skills (at times)
Testing Trends: Management
Management is more conscious of need for testing
Management would like better way to look at status
Management would like to understand the quality of testing
Management would not want simple we are done answer
Testing Trends: Processes
(Some) People are fed up with heavy processes
Lightweight models
XP
SCRUM
(Some) People are fed up with development centric process models
CMM
ISO
CMMi
Testers want (?)
TMM
TPI.
Testing Trends: Testing in development
Developers are realizing importance of testing
Unit testing frameworks such as CPPUnit, JUnit, HTTPUnit
Test driven development
Test are written first and code written later
Unit Testing frameworks are used/developed
Testing Trends: Test Engineering
Testers who write code
OR
Developers who write code for testing
Hottest trend
Not many people in this area
Requires extensive coding and architecture skills to create frameworks that endure
Requires understanding of needs of the testers
Testing Trends: System Testing
Role of system testing in Agile methods is still evolving
Traditional model of testing is no longer considered sacrosanct
(only) Scripted testing is not the right method
Requirements based testing is not the only way to do testing
Requirements are seldom complete
Requirements are seldom true to users
Requirements are seldom correctly prioritized
Exploratory testing has broken some of the myths
Simultaneous test design and execution
No writing of test cases as soon as requirements are available
Reuse of test cases using things like Q-Patterns
Testing Trends: Automation
More automation is happening
Not necessarily in the right direction
More people understand how to automate
Data driven and key word driven
More people understand that automation is not the way in many cases
Tools
Lifecycle tools
Requirements traceability
Test design tools
Test case management tools
Test execution tools
Stress, performance tools
Defect management tools
IDE for testers
Testing Trends: Domain knowledge
As more testing gets done at Unit level, need for higher level testing at the system level increases.
This requires more domain knowledge and system testing knowledge.
Innovation
The classic definitions of innovation include:
the process of making improvements by introducing something new
the act of introducing something new: something newly introduced
(The American Heritage Dictionary).

What are the innovations in testing you have come across?
Are these incremental or breakthrough/radical
What are you doing about innovation in
Testing processes
Testing techniques/design
Automation
Anything else
Testing Excellence
What is excellence in testing?
Is it finding all the bugs? All the critical bugs?
Is it conformance to requirements/standards?
Is it breaking the software?
Is it excellence in system testing only?
Automation?
What is personal excellence in testing?
What are various skills required to excel?
Ability to find critical bugs quickly?
Ability to understand markets and users?
Ability to understand technology
Communication?
Team work?
What are you doing about it?
Have you mapped your career path or is it driven only by accidents?
