Career Opportunities In Remodeling

By:

Remodeling industry careers are accessible to and enjoyed by many types of people with different educational backgrounds and professional experiences. It takes a variety of people and skills to create a remodeling company, from labor to management and everything in between.
*People with four-year degrees in subjects ranging from business management and project planning to architecture and interior design choose careers in the remodeling industry.
*Others are trained through two-year remodeling-specific programs at vocational schools or technical colleges.
*High-school graduates wishing to break into the industry can learn from the ground up through experience and hands-on job training.

Project-specific labor companies (think painters, plumbers, electricians, and stone masons), also enjoy the benefits of working in the remodeling industry, without being remodeling-specific laborers.

Starting a Career in Remodeling

If you're willing to start at an entry-level job, the remodeling business isn't hard to break into without experience. And people both with and without remodeling-specific training often find they already have some related experience from previous jobs or their daily lives. Regardless of your education level, consider any hands-on remodeling, construction, or management experience you already have from other areas of your life that may apply to remodeling, which can help you find the remodeling niche you want to pursue.

Many remodeling companies actually prefer workers with a variety of skills over ones with a highly specialized skill and will promote from within the company. Since the very nature of the industry is to combine a variety of skills and materials to complete a project, workers who can apply their skills to more than one area of remodeling are coveted.

Switching to a Career in Remodeling

Despite the recession, the remodeling business is still thriving. In part, it's because new construction is down. With less money to spend, people are investing their dollars in home improvement projects that help boost resale value and make homes more functional and enjoyable in the meantime. At the same time, more people are selling their homes, and newly remodeled homes are proven to sell faster for a higher price.

Many professionals in construction-related businesses are switching their work and marketing efforts to focus on the remodeling industry. For example, architects that once designed high-end homes are now making a career out of designing high-end remodels, and finding that redesigns are now more in demand.

If you're not currently working in the remodeling industry but would like to make the transition, there are a number of things you can do:
*Take training courses or earn a degree from a two-year college or junior college.
*Attend weekend and evening seminars offered by remodeling companies, realtors, and other industry experts, often free of charge.
*Read industry blogs and browse jobs listed online.
*Contact local remodeling companies about open positions.
Work on your own home remodeling projects and start building a portfolio.

There are a lot of ways you can break into the remodeling business, and with the number of already existing homes out there, it's an industry that's likely to prosper for a long time.
