Retail sector in India has come to be known as the sunrise sector of the country with the promising opportunities that it has opened up. The sector is expanding at a rapid speed. It suffered a temporary blow with the global economic downturn but the tide is back to normal now and retail sector is looking up again. With the growth, the job opportunities n the sector also rose and so did the demand for retail management courses. To become a retail executive or retail manager, there were not many specialized courses earlier. However, now the scenario has changed for good and many retail courses have been launched by colleges in India and the private institutes too. There are degrees; diploma as well as certificate course in retail that one can opt for.

To start a career in this industry, no specialized qualification is required. So, even a normal graduate in any stream with a passion for sales can start off as a retail executive with a brand. Having said this, it has been seen that people with qualification in commerce, statistics, business, management tend to better in retail than others. To grow in this field and to rise to senior positions, an MBA in Retail or a post graduate course in retail management would be required. There are many post graduate diplomas in retail too that one can pursue. Some well known courses in retail include Postgraduate Diploma in Retailing and Merchandising Management, Postgraduate Diploma in Retail Management, Diploma in Retail Management, Fashion Retail Management etc.

The duration of these courses ranges from a year to 18 months. Other than these, there are short-term certificate courses too that can be completed in three to six months. While currently there are not many colleges in India that offer specialized retail courses, the number is slated to rise with the growing demand for trained staff. The eligibility to pursue these courses varies from institute to institute. For a postgraduate degree, commerce students are preferred though graduate from any stream can pursue a post graduate course in retail. For undergraduate courses, a pass in 12th class is required. For MBA, many institutes conduct entrance exams. To prepare for these MBA in Retail programs, one can join an institute that specializes in training students for such courses.

To succeed in a career in retail, there is more than just the qualification that is required in a person. One should have certain skill sets to make it big in the retail industry. Firstly, the communication skill should be well developed. Retail is all about selling and the convincing powers of the retail executive are what make or break a sale. The person should have patience, a thorough knowledge of the products of the company. He/she should also understand the pulse of the market and consumer mindset. These traits make one successful in the retail field. With so many big brands investing money in the retail sector and the spending capacity of the average Indian rising, the sector will grow exponentially in the near future. Hence, now is the time to enter this industry and make hay.
