Career Exploration Inventory Assists In Deciding On A Career

By:

The pressures are great on high school students to make major life decisions concerning their future career goals. Decisions made at even that young age can, and will, have a major impact on available choices many years in the future. Yet, at this point in life, experiences are limited as is the self-awareness to be able to make such decisions with the full understanding of the impact and potential consequences involved.

Making the right career choice in the teen years can result in tremendous success as we have seen in such notable figures as Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, and designer Trina Turk, all of whom knew very early in their lives the careers they wanted to pursue. Knowing this, they were able to direct their efforts towards specific goals without wasting a step along the way to success. Most, however, have a number of interests along the way and find it more difficult to narrow those interests down to a single pursuit that will engage for a successful lifetime career. Additionally, few are really aware of the hundreds of vocational opportunities are available to them to allow them to make truly informed choices about their futures.

Student expenses are increasing every year at the university level making it even more important to choose the right major from the very beginning. Every change of major has expensive repercussions and quitting school before getting the degree means losing those benefits and future opportunities but still getting stuck with the bill and student loans. Taking an extra step to help ensure that the first choice of college major is the best choice will help to achieve those life goals with fewer missteps and detours that cost valuable time and effort as well as money.

Studies have been done to discover that people who are successful in a specific profession, vocation, or college major share a number of interests, talents, and personality traits. These are specific traits that can be identified and measured to help determine one's potential success in a particular field. Participating in a career exploration inventory can help students measure and better understand their strongest interests as they relate and match to personal characteristics and those known to fit with success in a chosen field. These available and affordable tools can be used by students to help successfully plan futures while assisting them in deciding on a career that is ideally suited to their unique interests and personal characteristics.
