Career Advice For Changing Jobs Later In Life

By:

Many people may think it is too late to change careers once they reach an arbitrary middle age. They come to believe that the old adage you cant teach an old dog new tricks holds true about their career. This simply is not true and there is some very good career advice that you need to consider. You can change careers at any time in your life and there are actually very good reasons to choose to do this and no better time than now.

Whether the company you work for is downsizing or closing down completely, or you discover your skills have become obsolete replaced with new technology, youll need to immediately start thinking about a different career path. There are also times when you need to change your career for your own reasons such as when you realize that you are no longer happy with the career choice you made years ago. With the current change in the business environment and the introduction of new industries, change is common and opportunities for new career paths are everywhere if you are willing to change with change.

Start by taking an inventory of your skills, assess your knowledge and determine your strengths. Consider your job experience and identify the things you are most effective doing and can contribute your talent to be an effective team member. These simple exercises will be beneficial when you begin considering new career options, and will enhance your ability to present yourself with confidence. You will have the information that you need in order to choose the most appropriate and satisfying new career path and avoid considering positions for which you are not skilled.

Despite the less than optimistic information about baby boomers being replaced and displaced there are industries that welcome boomers. Advice and guidance from a career coach who specializes and has had several successes in helping boomers transition is money well spent. They will help you open your eyes to opportunities you cannot see. There are a few industries that warrant consideration since they need the experience of senior careerists who are open to new possibilities such as the energy sector, biotech and nanotech industries and research and development in government.

It does not matter where you are in your life, there is always time to change careers even if you need to learn a few new skills. The best thing to do is seek sound career advice, welcome change and be prepared to do a little work. No matter the reason you have for changing jobs, you will need to think about your skill sets, your knowledge and your experience and align them with the careers that are available that you are most suitable for and in which you can make the most contribution. Taking this type of inventory will help you make the right decisions. And, you dont have to do it alone.
