Career Advancement Is About More Than Just Making Money

By:

When you think about career advancement your initial thought may be about making more money. Not all steps of a career advancement strategy will result in a significant increase in salary. Many steps involve lateral moves essential to gain experience and knowledge resulting in smaller and less lifestyle altering salary increases. Perhaps they will result in an increase in nontraditional benefits. Of course a result of career advancement would include increases in salary, but this is not a goal that will maintain your motivation to achieve your career goals. Youll find it easy to lose sight of goals and lose the motivation that you need.

Surveys consistently show that it is the ability to contribute and be a part of the bigger plan of company strategy that motivates and is the number one indicator of job satisfaction of most professionals.

Being able to contribute not only increases self-confidence but also is a motivator to take successive steps toward advancing your career, making you much happier with your career overall. When you are able to take steps forward to gain skills, knowledge and experience in your job, then you will feel a great sense of personal achievement, supporting the need for planned career advancement.

Although there is a lot of security in increased salary as you advance your career, not only to enhance your current lifestyle, but also to ensure financial security once you retire, you should not overlook benefits. With career advancement comes more and improved benefits. There will come a time when you will retire. When that day comes along, you should be advanced enough in your career that you will be able to retire with ease. That does not just mean having financial security, but also retiring with benefits that will continue taking care of your health needs as well as providing income from investments and corporate retirement plans. As your career advances, you will have more opportunities to invest and create an investment portfolio that will provide for you into the future.

Finally, career advancement has to do with having a job for the long term. If you just stay in one place in your career, eventually your superiors will think of you less as an asset and potentially more of a liability particularly if your skills, knowledge and experience dont change with the needs of the company. If you want to make yourself irreplaceable to stay in a career for as long as youd like to work, then you have to make yourself irreplaceable by looking for ways to keep your career ahead of the curve.

There is much more to career advancement than just making more money. When you think about these things like planning for the future and personal achievements and contribution, you will find it much easier to stay motivated and stay happy with the steps that you are taking in your career.
