Care Tire Maintenance For Your Car

By:

The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has discovered in studies that over 10,000 injuries and 400 fatalities happen in the US due to blowouts of tires.

You would think with figures like this people would take note and maintain their tires appropriately, however the truth is many people either are not bothered or do not know how.

Tires are comparable to feet in the sense many people overlook them until something goes wrong. The only time we pay attention is when something seems wrong. The problem is, if you fail to maintain your tires you put yourself at serious risk of an accident.

If a tire fails you while doing over 50 miles an hour down the freeway, you are almost certainly in trouble. If you maintain your tires appropriately however, you can avoid this danger and drive in safety. On top of avoiding accidents, you will also enjoy the benefits of your car performing at its maximum.

Blowouts happen for two reasons. You are putting too much weight on the tires or they have not been inflated enough. When either of these happen the amount of heat and strain on the tires is immense.

Your tires will react to altering temperature conditions in a big way. When warmer weather rolls around your tires will lose air at a faster rate than they would in cooler weather. Pressure falls at a steady 1 - 2 pounds most times of the year, during the summer this amount goes up.

If you are wise you will check the pressure in your tires when you drop by a gas station for fuel. At the very least you should make sure you check the tire pressure before embarking on a lengthy journey, and then once a month on top of that. If you don't want to do it yourself you can pay somebody at an auto repair shop for a small fee to do it for you.

In the event you experience a blowout while driving you need to keep your composure and fight the urge to slam on the breaks. Most people will do this out of instinct not knowing it will make things worse and will cause the car to veer out of control. The best strategy to employ is to gradually put your foot on the break while keeping control of the car and moving to a safe area where you can put on your spare.

You can help avoid this situation however if you regularly check your tires, just think about who travels in your car and that will be all the motivation you need.
