Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops circulating the blood throughout the body. Although cardiac arrest can be caused as a result of a heart attack, it differs in that a heart attack may prevent blood flow to certain parts of the body whereas a cardiac arrest prevents the delivery of blood to all parts. The causes of cardiac arrest are numerous, but can include both cardiac and non-cardiac explanations. In adult victims, the primary cause of cardiac arrest is ischemic heart disease, followed by myocardial infarction, structural abnormalities, cardiomyopathies, and arrhythmias. Causes which are not directly related to the heart include cancer, trauma, overdoses, infections, and many others.

Cardiac arrest is classified as a medical emergency. If the condition is treated quickly, victims can make a full recovery. CPR is the first and primary treatment for the condition, which provides support for the circulatory system and to the lungs. Cardiac arrest usually requires advanced medical treatment, so it is important to call 911 as well as performing the technique.

When attempting to diagnose cardiac arrest, the key feature to look for is whether or not a carotid pulse exists. The carotid artery lies on the side of the neck, and in a healthy, viable person, can be felt with the fingertips as it pulses with blood. If an emergency victim lacks this pulse, it is likely that they have gone into cardiac arrest. If there is still a pulse, but no breath, the individual may have gone into respiratory arrest.

The lives of many cardiac arrest victims can be saved if proper CPR techniques are performed quickly and accurately.
