Car Tyre Safety - How To Make Them Last

By:

Taking care of your tyres can prolong their road life by as much as 50 percent.
Here are 10 tips on how to make your tyres last longer while staying safe too and saving on fuel costs.

1) Buy a tyre gauge. Checking your air pressure and keeping tyres properly inflated means your rubber lasts longer, you will save cash on fuel and of course maximize safety.

2) Under inflated tyres run hotter, which leads to rubber failure. Too much air means the centre of the tyre will wear more quickly.

3) Always check pressures when the tyre is cold otherwise you get a false reading.

4) Stay a couple of pounds under the maximum indicated on the tyre wall. This will allow for when pressure builds up when the vehicle is fully loaded. Always running at full pressure can cause the centre of the tyre to wear faster.

5) Keep a check for uneven wear on your tyres. Wear on the outside edge or the middle can be an indication that something is wrong, which can be remedied, before the tyre becomes useless.

6) Wheel balancing and alignment should be checked every six months. Clipping kerbs or hitting potholes can be devastating to alignment, shortening the lifetime of your tyre by more than 25 per cent. An indication alignment is out can be a vibrating steering wheel or the car pulling to the left or right on breaking.

7) Keep them moving. Rotating tyres from back to front or left to right is a simple way of maximizing their life. Most tyre workshops will do this for you at a very low cost and takes only a few minutes. Aim to do this every 6,000 8,000 miles.

8) Worn out shock absorbers can bounce your tyres longevity into touch. If you think your shocks are wearing get them checked.

9) Buy good quality. You get what you pay for in life, and tyres are no exception. What might seem like a great deal can prove a costly mistake in the long run if the tyres need replacing quickly.

10) Cleaning tyres removes foreign substances from the tyre surface that can degrade them. Just use soap and water. Always remove even the smallest stones from the tyre straight away. Check your rubbers at least once a month too.
