Car Tires: Tips For Proper Tire Changing

By:

Understanding car safety and maintenance will help you to be a safer driver. You should have at least a basic knowledge and experience with certain repairs that need to be done in an emergency. Perhaps the most important of all these is having the ability to change a tire on the roadside.

There are just a few simple steps involved in changing a tire, but if you ever need to change a blown tire, knowing these steps will help you to get safely back on the road. Just by reviewing these tips in advance of ever having to need them will help you to have all the tools and step-by-step instructions you'll need in case of an emergency.

You only need 3 things to change a car tire: a lug wrench, a car jack and of course, a spare tire. You should keep all of these things in the truck of your car so you will have them available.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to change your tire:

Step #1 - Pull off the road to a safe spot so you can change your tire. Get the tire jack, lug wrench and spare tire out and ready.

Step #2 - Put the parking brake on to prevent your car from rolling or moving while changing the tire.

Step #3 - Remove the hubcap or rim cover if applicable and then, using a star-shaped motion, loosen the lug nuts. You must not remove them completely, the goal here is to just loosen them so they can be easily taken off when you are ready.

Step #4 - Check your car's manual to find out where you should place the car jack so you will be able to reach and replace the tire easily. When you get your car up you can then remove the loosened lug nuts.

Step #5 - Pull the flattened tire off and replace it with the spare. Hand tighten the lug nuts back onto the new tire. Each lug should be tightened evenly on the rim as much as possible by hand.

Step #6 - Release the jack to carefully lower your car back down.

Step #7 - Use the lug wrench to tighten each nut as much as possible, using the star formation again. Put all of the parts and tools back into your vehicle's compartment area.

Preparing ahead of time by reading these steps or even by watching how-to videos on the Internet will help you to know what you need to do. These tools should always be kept in your care in case of emergency. You should also always bring a fully-charged cell phone with you and take it with you while changing the tire in case anything goes wrong or if you need assistance.
