Car seat legal requirements and factors to consider when choosing one

If youre a parent looking to purchase a child car seat, youll need to be aware of the UKs car seat laws. Because car seats and seatbelts are not designed for kids, its a legal requirement to have specially-designed seats fitted for children under 12 years-old, or for those measuring less than 135 cm tall.

With approximately 70 per cent of infant car seats not fitted correctly though, its imperative not just that car seats are installed but that they are fastened securely. So, when youre shopping for baby car seats, what are the most important things to consider?

Is it the correct type?

To guarantee car seat safety, its vital to think about your childs height and weight. If you have a baby, for example, theyll need a rearward-facing seat, whereas if they weigh 9 kg and above theyll be suitable for a forward-facing seat. Parents are advised to keep their little ones in a rearward seat for as long as possible, though.

Is it the correct size?

Its one of the accepted car seat rules that its not the age of your child thats key, its their weight. When you buy a car seat, take a note of its weight limit - once your child exceeds this, theyll need the next model up.

Does it fit correctly?

Car seats arent designed to be fitted in all vehicles, so you need to ensure that yours is able to accommodate the seat you want - remember also that the car seat will need to comfortably seat your child, not just the car, and that it may need to be adjusted after it has been fitted inside the vehicle.

There are a number of car seats to choose from - ranging from those designed specifically for babies to car booster seats for toddlers. Once youve selected the correct one, ensure it is installed according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
