Car Hire Tales From High Octane Adventurers

By:

On a recent trip to the south of France to every Yachties favourite, Antibes, a friend and I decided to leave the boats behind and head for the mountains. Because we'd originally planned to spend all our time on board a superyacht, we had flown to our destination, which left us without transport of our own. After toying with the idea of scooter rental, we decided on car hire for our next adventure, after all, who wants to be thousands of feet up the side of a mountain balancing on just two wheels!

A trip to the nearby mountains is a somewhat treacherous affair, winding roads, steep cliffs and overhanging ledges that have a tendency to drop rubble onto the road far too frequently all add up to what feels like a massive amount of danger, especially if balanced on a scooter, protected by nothing more than a helmet. At least in a car, there is balance, control, and a protective roof. The car hire company we chose didn't seem to mind that we were taking one of their fleet cars on journey fraught with danger, as the insurance for the day remained the same as normal, and our planned antics weren't considered a breach of the policy.

My friend and I once hired an off road vehicle when we wanted to explore the sandier parts of Morocco, but the car hire company we chose said the dunes were out of bounds in their four by fours. Thinking we could get away with a quick spin, we took to the desert like a storm, but soon realised that vehicles have a tendency to fill up with sand in all the places you really don't want them too, like the engine. After a brief breakdown, we returned the vehicle to the car hire forecourt and were issued a stern telling off.

The insurance did not cover damage by sandblast, and as such, my friend and I faced a hefty fine to cover repairs. It was worth the fun and the drama as far as we were concerned though. This time, on a more leisurely break that could actually see us tumble down the side of rocky terrain, we decided it was best to 'fess up to the car hire company, and at least that way we would be privy to any safety advice they might like to offer as well. To our surprise, the journey wasn't regarded as dangerous at all, and with a wave of a hand, they packed us off on our adventure. My friend and I exchanged a quick glance, and with a twinkle in our eyes, we knew that we were no ordinary day trippers, we live for the extreme, and who knows how we would fare up the side of that mountain once the adrenalin kicked in!
