Car Hire; A Timeline Of Development

By:

Car hire is around a century old and heavily entwined with the motor industry. This symbiotic relationship was begat with the release of the first widespread motor car, the Model T Ford. The first car hire company owner is believed to be an American man going by the name of Joe Saunders. Saunders' inspired idea was to take a selection of Model Ts and rent them to passing salesmen who needed their own transport whilst in a local area. Fundamentally car hire allowed a salesman to use the railroad to traverse the country and then pedal their wares in the local vicinity before moving on.

Saunders' idea was quickly jumped upon by other entrepreneurs. Car hire companies rapidly spread, some even going national with outlets at a number of different train stations. This relationship with public transport continued with the dawning of the air travel age. Increasingly planes were replacing trains as a means of traversing the country and even the world; once again car hire companies were some of the first businesses to locate their services within airports. Ultimately the convenience of having a method of onward travel was a profitable venture.

Throughout the latter part of the twentieth century car hire companies got larger, some are now even classed as multinationals, with immense power in the world of commerce. Today it seems as if the rental companies may in fact be entering a time of profit. Despite the current world economy being in recession car rental is still a means of travel that in many cases is the most affordable option. For example when the cost of travelling with a group of four adults on the train is considered, the majority of the time a hire car will work out to be the cheaper option.

Naturally the world of business, having been the initial market for car hire entrepreneurs remains an important element in any financial strategy. Businessmen and women the world over utilise rental cars in order to travel between meetings, not just abroad but also domestically. Subsequently many companies have constructed special loyalty schemes that benefit businesses. These schemes offer cheaper rates for high volume users and the option to avoid the cues.

From meagre beginnings in the heart of America the car hire industry has become a powerhouse in the world of commerce, but what is next? It is likely that more technology will be incorporated into cars and an environmental emphasis will be placed on rental. Fundamentally the practicality and convenience of renting has been constant throughout this development and will continue to be important in years to come.
