Car Features And Specifications Of 4wds And Suvs

By:

The car features and specifications of 4WDs and SUVs vary to some degree from one model or vehicle to the next; however, there are a number of similarities between them that make them more alike than different for most people. The generic marketing term SUV usually refers to a vehicle that is similar to a station wagon but which is typically built on a chassis for light trucks. In many cases, SUVs tend to come with four wheel drive, allowing them to be driven on or off road, and to varying degrees, they may be capable of off road use.

4WDs are similar, and there is a great degree of overlap between 4WDs and SUVs; however, it is important to note that not every SUV comes equipped with four wheel drive, while at the same time, not every 4WD vehicle is classified as an SUV. There are a number of SUVs that may have the capacity to tow large objects or other vehicles in much the same way as a pickup truck. There are others that allow their drivers to carry as many passengers as those capable of fitting into a large sedan or a minivan.

Since SUVs are considered to be light trucks and frequently will borrow their platforms from pickup trucks, they often come with lower fuel economy estimates, as do 4WD vehicles; however, not all SUVs come with poor mileage. This article will discuss additional features and specifications of 4WDs and SUVs to educate potential purchasers of each.

In general, 4WDs are more capable of being used in off road roles than are SUVs, as 4WDs by definition are equipped with the ability to deliver power to all four wheels of a vehicle. There are some 4WD vehicles that allow their drivers to turn off the 4WD feature when it is not needed, as this results in less wear and tear on the drive train while increasing fuel economy. However, there are other 4WD vehicles that do not allow the system to be turned off. There are also 4WD vehicles that come with high and low sets of gearing to allow their drivers to tackle more difficult terrain with ease.

However, not all 4WD vehicles are equipped with such features, and those that are are likely to be significantly more expensive. When it comes to SUVs, buyers can choose from a range of vehicles spanning those that are more akin to pickup trucks to those that are more like minivans or small cars. There are even luxury SUVs that include brand name vehicles, higher levels of technology or comfort, or in some cases, higher performance. The term is applied to a wide range of types of SUVs and 4WDs, however, which can make it difficult to choose a vehicle classified as such.

Overall, SUVs and 4WD vehicles share a common history and enjoy high levels of popularity among car buyers today, due to their perceived off road capabilities, higher seating plane, and wide availability of features and customizability.
