Capoeria The Blending Art

By:

Capoeria means something different to everyone in the world. To some it is a way to practice self-defense and for others it is merely a game.

Despite why you practice capoeira it still provides a holistic benefit to the entire body, mind and spirit. Most martial arts are going to focus on destroying your enemy or keeping your body intact and unbroken, but capoeira focuses on enlightenment.

As you dance, fight, or just move through the motions you are effectively sparing and harmonizing with the opponent or partner. You will see that some people are very much aggressive in this sport where others purely defend.

There is an immense diversity of different moves that can be made either defensive or offensive. This martial art was actually developed by slaves in Brazil.

To keep their overseers from understanding what they were practicing they disguised it as a dance. Eventually when they escaped or were let go, they continued to practice the art just for the entertainment value.

The most unique thing about this is the very specific music style that is associated with the art. People form what is called a roda which is colloquially known as a dance circle now days.

Lining the perimeter of the dance circles are musicians or percussionist that hold a berimbau, pandeiros, atabaque, agogo and perhaps a ganza. The berimbau is the lead instrument and usually there are three of them to a circle.

This is essentially a string tied to a bent stick like a tightened rubber band. The percussionist then plays the string by hitting it with a different stick.

Pandeiros are very similar to tambourines but they are smaller and have a higher pitched sound. The atabaque is a very similar to a conga, and the agogo is a bell that is actually used in many popular orchestrations.

When the roda is formed, the musicians start playing following the lead berimbau. One by one a new instrument enters into the song, and as they do the fighters look from face to face.

Right now the floor is open until a fighter either calls someone out or waits for a volunteer. It is a spectacular sport to watch and even more spectacular to perform.

Capoeira is for everyone, whether you are 60 or just six years old you can still benefit from the holistically enthralling sport. Start practicing today and enlighten your soul and strengthen your body.
