Cancer Information: How To Overcome A Diagnosis Of Cancer

By:

While cancer facts are easily obtainable on the internet and from your doctor, if you or someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, panic sets in. Although there are a lot of cancer facts available from a variety of sources, a diagnosis of cancer can make one forget all the good news. The good news is that cancer is no longer a death sentence. Fortunately for patients, unlike in times past, cancer doesnt mean certain death anymore. Treatments for cancer are improving with time and research, and one day the expression finding a cure for cancer may cease to be synonymous with doing something almost impossible.

With more companies and scientists worldwide pooling their resources, a cure for cancer may soon be within reach. What is the definition of cancer? One of the best known cancer facts is that it has something to do with tumors. Sometimes the word tumor is often used interchangeably with cancer. Cancer facts most commonly known by laymen, definitely include the word tumor, and often erroneously replace cancer with the term.

On the other hand, it is possible for a tumor to be benign, and therefore pose no harm to the someone concerned, and hence not be dangerous to the patient. (A non-malignant tumor will not invade other cells or parts of the body and doesnt grow or spread through the body. A malignant tumor, on the other hand, grows out of control, invades and possibly destroys nearby tissues and may show metastasis as well (i.e. spreading to another part of the body).

Amongst the little known cancer facts is the fact that cancer might not even be painful, depending on its location. Less known cancer facts include the fact that symptoms of a cancer vary depending on where it is and the type of cancer it, as well as its site and nature.

Another of the cancer facts that could shock you is that cancer can even be caused by some types of poisonous mushrooms and a toxin that can grow on peanut plants. Adding to the list of unusual cancer facts, some mushrooms and even a poison that may grow on a peanut plant are known to cause cancer. (Dont let that put you off peanuts, though, peanuts are harmless. Although the toxin can grow on the peanut plant, the peanuts and the plant itself are harmless)

Other encouraging cancer facts include the statistic that the number of deaths to cancer is actually down from previous years. There has been a reduction in cancer-related deaths. This could be because people today are more health conscious and are cutting down on unhealthy activities like smoking.

This is thought to be caused by the larger awareness of health related issues and the dramatic drop in the number of smokers. They are also careful about overexposure to UV rays which can cause cancer. Too much excessive exposure to the sun and artificial tanning sources could also have contributed. More good news in cancer statistics is that theres more and more awareness of the disease and organisations worldwide are teaming up to fight cancer. Positive cancer facts like higher public awareness and more data into prevention and cure from organizations throughout the world also helps encourage those suffering from the disease.

While cancer is a notoriously difficult disease to cure, with patients sometimes needing three or more doctors (specialists in different areas), who may disagree with each other, patients should not give up. It is important to keep fighting. Positive thinking and will-power evidently work as well with cancer as they do with other illnesses, with patients making apparently miraculous recoveries because of their determination to survive. Holistic treatments have been known to give patients a much-needed [encouragement, and have sometimes been credited with being responsible for a complete remission.

Statistical cancer statistics may not be able to prove this, but faith in their religion can help a patient through the tough times that come with having cancer. Religious faith is also a great help in times of trouble, although there are no documented cancer facts to prove that prayer entirely can save a cancer patient. Most importantly, never ever lose hope. In the words of Winston Churchill, never give up.
