Actos, a brand carried by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. for pioglitazone hydrochloride, is an insulin sensitizer for Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It was recalled in France and Germany for
Actos bladder cancer. Actos, however, were allowed circulation in the US market with a label contraindication on bladder cancer or bladder tumors.
In todays medical world, there are two recognized types of diabetes mellitus. A lack of insulin can cause a Type 1 diabetes which can be remedied by augmenting lacking insulin in the human body. Type 2 is a disease occurring when cells resist insulin which can be cured by medications directed for increased insulin secretion by internal organs or its increased sensitivity to it. Derivative compounds of thiazolidinediones attempt to hamper this second type of diabetes.
The only approved drug for the use against type 2 diabetes is thiazolidinediones (TZD). To address cure for this type of disease, three drugs were formulated from this compound, namely: Rosiglitazone (Avandia), Pioglitazone (Actos) and Troglitazone (Rezulin). Eventually recalled from the US market due to risks to cardiovascular illness was Avandia, a GlaxoSmithKline-manufactured product. Rezulin, introduced and manufactured in the United States by Parke-Davis, was likewise restricted in the market for hepatitis risks. Because of these market restrictions, the avenue for Actos to penetrate the market of diabetic patients became a broad business venture and Actos was named as one of the best-selling drug in the United States.
A research was undertaken by Takeda Pharmaceutical for the possibility of linking Actos to bladder cancer. In September 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration conducted a review of the pioglitazone drug in response to the study made by Takeda.
Despite various complaints related to Actos bladder cancer among Actos consumers, the pioglitazone drug was not recalled by the US Food and Drug Administration. Widespread concern to Actos bladder cancer extended among consuming patients. Actoss grossed sales in the previous years. Thus, prescriptions were on a constant high for Actos among diabetic patients. Complaints for Actos bladder cancer mounted up as a likely consequence.
