Can You Use Url Shorteners?

By:

Recently, the next happened with me, I wrote my frequent weekly newsletter and posted it on my site. Since this was a longer Wp Web address, like countless other website owners, I used a URL shortening service to make this url more functional and manageable.

Then I went on and posted this shortened website link to Twitter and also mentioned it in my weekly e-newsletter. Immediately I began getting email messages from my website subscribers and fans.

I examined right away to find out if this was indeed my fault, but I immediately discovered that the shortener service didn't do the job. To compound the problem, I was choosing the Google URL shortener Goo.gl and since it was Google everybody assumed the mistake was on my part, I mean Google is Google.

Before that I was utilizing the really well-liked bit.ly but then I switched to Goo.gl because like everybody else, I trust Google much more! And everything functions better with Google; this was the very first time a thing I utilized with Google had not worked well as prepared. Not just mine but every other Goo.gl hyperlink wasn't working neither. No big loss, except if you were linking your Black Friday & Cyber Monday traffic through these shorteners.

This made me think whether I should use an URL shortener at all?

These types of services work by redirecting the longer Link you type in to a lot smaller one. If this is a permanent 301 redirect, then your SEO features should pass through to your longer hyperlink. No difficulty on that part. In case the redirection is just a 302, or temporary redirection then search engines won't identify any link juice flowing through your shortened URLs.

All the top Url shorteners such as tinyurl, bit.ly and goo.gl uses 301 redirects so that they are SEO friendly, if they are working!

I only started using those hyperlink shorteners simply because of Twitter that only gives you 140 characters to create your post. These shorteners can be great for sharing and spreading your own urls all around the net.

It is also a great and easy method to cover up your affiliate marketer hyperlinks if you are into affiliate marketing. Imagine that, many people promote shortened URLs more simply, simply because they are somewhat misterious and individuals usually link to funny videos, pictures or stories on social sites with one of these url links.

There are a good number of advantages but also some "cons" when using shortening services. The best way is always to take advantage of them but in a controllable way, for example by choosing services which have a good track record and are more popular; but of course you can (and maybe should) add less well-known ones to the mix also. Spreading your shortened URLs across a couple of the major and less well-liked services is a wise idea! You should use one assistance for links in your eBook, short reports, etc., then one other for your blog, Twitter and so on.
