Can You Install An Antenna In Your Attic?

By:

If you have done some research on where you can mount your antenna, you might have come across some information that might have changed your mind about a rooftop installation. That information is mounting your antenna in the attic. The attic is perfect for those who don't want to climb atop their roof or have an antenna cluttering their rooftop. Although the more updated antenna models are hardly an eyesore, some would prefer not having it where people can see.

Although an attic might not be the best place for your antenna, it has worked for people in the past. Some have found that the attic-mounted antenna picks up signals perfectly while others may have a harder time getting the reception to come in clearly. Which brand and model antenna you purchase will also influence how well it works because not all antennas are created equal and some do outperform others. Finding the right antenna for the attic will require some additional research on your part and perhaps consulting with an experience and knowledgeable antenna technician who has had experience mounting an antenna in the attic.

An attic installation is usually not recommended because the antenna usually needs a direct path to the broadcast towers to pick up the best reception. An outdoor antenna usually works the best because it is placed on your roof or on the side of your house where it has a straight shot to the towers with little to no interference. With an indoor antenna, you would be concerned with interference from electronics and household appliances and decreased signal strength because the antenna has to reach beyond the walls of your home.

In an attic, the antenna will not only have to overcome being indoors, but it has to be strong enough to overcome the many obstacles in its way. Aluminum, metal, shingles, and other building materials can all serve as obstructions and might hinder the antenna's performance. In addition, you have to determine whether there is ample room for the antenna, let alone for yourself when you need to install it. Sometimes, the attic is completely out of the question even before doing any measurements because it is too small to move around in.

However, like previously stated, an attic installation has worked for people before, and it really comes down to finding the right antenna to do the job for you. Find a knowledgeable sales associate from a reputable dealer and see if an attic-mounted antenna is right for you.
