If you have ever thought of going to college, you already know that you are getting ready to make a very big financial commitment. But, there are many ways to obtain help financially, some free and some not. A great number of students apply and receive financial help each year.

Financial aid makes it possible for over 50% of students to go to college, so you are definitely not the only person contemplating this. Financial aid comes in three main types at the college level: Grants and scholarships, loans and work study.

The good news about grants and scholarships is they don't have to be repaid but obtaining one of these is highly competitive. Most students who qualify for these spend little time hanging out with the guys.

They strive to excel in all courses of study. If you are able to be awarded a grant or scholarship, you will probably need to maintain a certain grade point average, and you might even be required to take certain courses.

Students loans must be paid back just as any other loan, but you at least don't have to worry about it until after you graduate. Student loans are not hard to get, even for students who don't have any kind of credit rating, and the interest rates are usually lower than other types of loans.

It is wise to always read all loan papers before signing them, to make sure you understand all the terms. Be aware that even a student loan is a loan that you are legally obligated to pay back, even in the event you stop going to school. Nothing like a loan you could get from your uncle. If you don't pay back your loan, the consequence could be a negative credit score for you and your parents.

Work and study programs are exactly what the name describes. You will have to work while you study. With this program you would be working full time hours during the summer, and only part time hours when school is in. Many colleges are quite understanding of students who need to work to make it through their college days, and they get involved in helping the student find a job that will not clash with the student's school schedule. Many jobs are on campus alleviating any transportation problem.

Merit Based Financial Aid is made available to students whose grades in high school never fell below a certain level. This is not related to financial need but awarded to students who meet certain academic requirements. Merit Based Aid is sometimes also awarded to students who have a specific talent.

Financial Aid based on need is decided upon the ability of the student's, and his parents', ability to pay for college. To apply, you will need to talk to your school guidance counselor in high school. Make sure you are ready to fill out forms for any scholarships, grants and loans you will be applying for.

The federal government supplies most aid for college at about 75%, but there are other sources. The other 25% is provided by organizations such as Rotary Clubs, religious institutions and other professional organizations such as credit unions and corporations. You should be able to obtain information at the headquarters of these organizations. With dogged determination you'll find the money needed for your education. Somewhere out there, the right type of financial aid is awaiting you. Go get it!
