Can You Bribe Your Teen To Refrain From Smoking Tobacco

By:

It has been years since most parents were teenagers, but many of them have not forgotten what it was like to be one. Going through the teenage years can be some of the most difficult in a life. Kids from the age of 13, and sometimes younger, all the way through until they turn 18 and graduate high school, can be faced with bad temptation after temptation at school and other places. Their peers can talk them into doing a lot of things that they might not have ever done had they been left alone. Every kid goes through this at one time or another and for a parent, finding ways to keep a teen on track can be one of the most challenging things they can ever do for them.

So, the question is, if you can not be with your teen all of the time to keep an eye on what they are being confronted with, how can you be reasonably sure that they will make the right choices when it comes to things like smoking cigarettes? Well, there is no sure fire method that anyone knows of, but there are probably some things you can do to help convince them to make the right choice.

Giving your teen goals to keep and incentives to keep those goals in check might be considered bribery, but that really should not bother a parent if it provides the results you are after. Anything that you can come up with that will keep your teen from smoking, drinking, having sex or trying some other drug, might well be worth using as a way to help them be successful with abstinence from these sorts of things. If the promise of a car when they turn 16 or a great senior trip when they graduate is what it takes to keep them on the right track, then it will be worth it.

Of course, not every parent has the means to offer such luxurious things to their teen if they refrain from smoking tobacco and other things, but you might use something else if you can. You might have some family treasure they admire or sometimes just a smaller amount of money could be enough for some teens to tow the line. Some people might not agree that bribery with rewards is a good thing, but actually it is no different than offering a toddler a piece of candy if they are good in the grocery store. Parents must be very creative in order to keep their kids safe and there is no time that it is easier for them to make mistakes that could have tragic and life altering consequences than when they are teenagers. Any sacrifice a parent can make to help ensure their teen has the best start in life as possible is not too much when you want the best for your kid.
