Can You Be A Good Candidate For Dental Implants?

By:

Missing a tooth or more is nothing to smile about. It does not only diminish your self-confidence but it can also have a negative effect on how you chew, bite or speak. At present, dental implants are considered as the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Implants do not only look and feel natural but also they fit more securely than conventional substitutes. Not everyone, however, is a good candidate for this procedure.

An ideal candidate for dental implants must in good physical and dental health. The teeth and gums must be healthy and free from cavities, periodontal disease, or other infections. Systemic or chronic diseases like uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, hemophilia, severe gum disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, and immune deficiency should be addressed, controlled, or resolved first before the implantation is initiated. A good candidate must also have adequate bone in the jaw, mainly because its needed to support and anchor the implant. In cases where bone loss has occurred due to severe gum disease, implantation is held back until the bone is rebuilt through bone grafting.

Although good physical and dental health is an essential requirement for dental implantation, an ideal candidate must also have the commitment and motivation to take care of the implant. Regular and consistent good dental hygiene practices are a must for long-term success of the procedure. A regular visit to the dentist is also necessary.

Although dental implants are the most effective solutions for individuals of all ages, growing children who are in need of implant replacements are not treated until jaw growth is completed.

The risk of implant failure increases with heavy smoking, intake of immunosuppressant drugs like steroids, and habitual severe grinding or clenching of the teeth. Individuals who have these conditions must explore other treatment options with their dentists.
