Can Mcfarlane Save Spawn

By:

In 1992 comic book artist Todd McFarlane went on to create the best selling independent comic book of all time, Spawn. Spawn told the story of Al Simmons, a soldier who is murdered by his superiors and goes to Hell, only to be reborn on earth as a Hell-Spawn, a soldier of the demon Malbolgia who wishes to take over the Earth and destroy Heaven.

The comic book was an outrageous hit with audiences who loved the amount of ultraviolence in the stories, and the incredible amount of detail in McFarlane's artwork. Spawn launched a successful toyline, animated series, and even a movie in 1997 (a movie with special effects that have not aged well in the past twelve years). Spawn took McFarlane from just a well known artist into a billionaire entertainment mogul. But in the past ten years Spawn has gone from constant number one seller to a book that cannot even break into the top twenty of the comics market.

The book has almost become a joke among fans due to the lack of interest in it. However, McFarlane has vowed to change all of that. And how is he going about it? By killing off his main character. That is right, the main character, Al Simmons has killed himself and been replaced by a new Spawn named Jim. This has already generated some interest in the book and may be the start of Spawn becoming popular again.

McFarlane has even started to rebuild his own popularity as an artist, working on the new comic book series Haunt. Many have said that the reason McFarlane went from entertainment juggernaut to being hardly active is due to McFarlane not being in tune with what audiences want. But with his new determination to make a come back, he has already promised to not only do more artwork, but to personally write and direct a new Spawn film, which he says will be grittier and more realistic compared to the film from 1997, and that he is particularly inspired by the film The Departed.

As a former Spawn fan, I am hoping that McFarlane is able to recover and bring the character back to prominence, but for now that uphill battle could go either way. McFarlane will have to prove that Spawn is more than just a fad from the 90s and that it is a franchise that has lasting power. He will also have to break the series from some of its gimmicks to make audiences take it seriously again.
