Can I Use Regular Lighter Fluid In A Butane Lighter?

By:

A butane lighter uses compressed gas to produce flame. A regular refillable lighter uses fluid, which is a liquid, and the two are not interchangeable. The gas won't work for filling up a regular refillables reservoir and, of course, you can't get liquid through a valve that was meant to accommodate gasses.

You cannot interchange the two. Lighter fluid is usually naphtha, which is an entirely different substance than butane. Butane is more refined and, for high-end lighters, it's usually recommended that users go with a brand that is double or triple refined for the best results. There are cheaper options on the market, as well, if you're not so worried about this aspect of the lighter fluid. However, you may clog your lighter's jet burners by using cheap fuel.

Butane comes out as a gas, so there's no residue when you light something with it. The gas is sometimes put under higher pressures and run through a jet that gives off a blue flame. This makes it easier to light cigars without actually touching the flame to the cigar, which is usually the preferred method. There is enough heat off of this jet of flame to ensure that the cigar lights and the pressure makes sure that it doesn't drift back and forth while you're trying to light it.

The butane fluid is more refined than standard fluid, as well. The higher-end brands are usually termed triple-refined and they're used in torch style lighters. They're good for any device, however, because they have a minimum of impurities in them and this makes them easier on the devices themselves. If you're worried about the quality of the flame and about the device being reliable, more refined butane is usually a better way to go as it is more flammable and more reliable. This is also true of windproof torches that are designed for outdoors activities more than they are for smoking.

If you're looking for butane, remember that you specifically need butane, not other gasses. One of the ways that lighter and butane manufacturers keep things safe is by making sure that the nozzles on butane lighters only fit with butane canisters. If you cannot fit your canister to your lighter, chances are that they're not made for one another. Never use anything except for butane in a butane lighter and make sure that you store the refill canister in a safe place when it's not in use.
