Can I Smoke My Cigars Right After I Buy Them?

By:

An immense amount of myth, folklore and just plain odd stories surround smoking cigars. Some of these date back a very long time, to the days before humidors. For instance, dipping cigars into rum was once a standard way of adding humidity back to your cigars. However, many smokers have heard the rule that smoking your cigars immediately after purchase is inadvisable. Is this true? If so, then why? Much like the stories that a butane lighter will not impart a chemical taste to your cigars, this one is true.

Why should you not smoke your cigars immediately after purchasing them? To answer this question, imagine that you are entering a tobacconist's shop. The humidor is filled with wonderful cigars and you can almost taste the fantastic smoke from your soon-to-be purchases. However, when did those cigars arrive at the store? How long have they been inside the humidor? How long did they sit, waiting to be stocked? Much like making sure your butane lighter has plenty of fuel, your cigar needs plenty of moisture. Smoking a dry cigar is a quick way to lose interest in your pastime and can lead to unpleasant results.

While certainly not true of all establishments, some tobacco shops allow their cigars to sit for very long periods outside the humidor, waiting the chance to be stocked. While this is normal operating procedure for the shop, it can have bad effects on your enjoyment. The best option is to take your cigars home and allow them to sit in your humidor for at least a day. This allows the cigars to regain needed moisture and come back to their pristine condition. Smoking them immediately after purchasing them is much like trying to light a butane lighter without fuel , you won't find very good results and your experience will be less than memorable.

If you do not have a humidor at home, ask the tobacconist if they will hold your cigars for a day or so, within their humidor. Some shops have a special, smaller humidor set aside for this exact purpose. This will help ensure that your cigars have the necessary moisture for a good smoke and will save you the problems associated with dry cigars. As you can see, some stories surrounding cigars, such as the tale about butane lighters and that of moisture in your cigars are very true and should catch your attention.
