Can I Ruin My Cigar By Dipping It In Alcohol?

By:

Perhaps you have an older family member who routinely dips their cigars in rum or cognac. If so, you're likely wondering if this is a good way to add flavor to your smokes. However, if you checked with a tobacco shop or a tobacconist, you've likely been warned away from the practice. Why is this, you ask? Isn't this a good way to add flavor or moisture to your cigars? It is highly recommended that you abstain from dipping your cigars in anything at all and saving your torch cigar lighter for "pure" cigars.

Why should you not dip your cigars in these complementary alcohols? First, the practice is very old. You should understand that it originated long before humidity control was sufficiently advanced that cigars were kept moist at all times. During these times, dipping a cigar in a substance such as rum or cognac was the only way to moisten the tobacco and provide a slower burn. However, today the story is much different. In fact, you will find that if you do dip your cigars in alcohol, they'll become quite soggy and almost unable to be smoked. Even a torch cigar lighter cannot be used to successfully light a soggy cigar.

Yet another reason not to dip your cigars is the fact that your cigar will not smell like whatever substance you dipped it into when you light it. You might imagine that rum flavored or cognac flavored cigars would impart a wonderful flavor. However, the reality is quite different. You might find that dipping your cigars actually removes the very taste you are seeking to enhance and that your enjoyment of the cigar is quite reduced. In this case, it doesn't even make a difference whether you use a lighter fluid based lighter or a butane lighter such as a torch cigar lighter.

If you find that you enjoy the combination of quality cigars and rum or cognac, the best option is to put the alcohol in a glass and smoke while you enjoy your cigar. This will provide you with an enormous amount of satisfaction, as well as avoiding the sodden mess that will result from dipping your cigar in alcohol, not to mention the fact that you'll be wasting money. Having a quality torch cigar lighter on hand will also ensure that you are able to keep your cigar burning smoothly and evenly during your evening of enjoyment.
