Can I Request An Hourly Driver When Mine Is Sick?

By: Paul McDuffy

When you have a courier driver that you subcontract from a courier company to work for your organization full time, it is safe to say that the happiness of your customers and the success of your business depends to a very large extent on that driver and their efficient work for your company, otherwise none of your customers orders are fulfilled, and simply put, your company is losing money. However, no employee is proof against the things in life that happen to everybody, such as getting the flu, so what happens when your regular driver gets sick? Luckily, most 3PL providers have some kind of provision in place to make sure that these kinds of situations are addressed quickly so that your company won't suffer despite your driver not being able to come to work.

Keep in mind that the number one objectives of any company, including your own, is to keep their customers satisfied at all times, no matter what industry they are in, and that certainly remains true for those that work in the transportation industry. Any kind of logistics provider usually has a pool of back up drivers that they have available for you to hire at your discretion when a situation comes up that leaves your regular driver unable to come to work. The best of these companies also have measures in place to make sure that the fill in transition goes as smooth as possible. Usually, any given transportation company is going to have a large group of good, possibly independent subcontractors, that they keep "on call" so that there is always someone available to fill in when this kind of situation comes up.

One of the things that a logistics or shipping provider is going to be sure and do for you is provide you with drivers that can be uploaded all of your shipping information and routes to their GPS units. This has been one of the best applications of this technology in the industry as it helps assure that there is no drop off in the level of service that you're going to receive when you have to hire a driver on a short term basis, because all of the routes and instructions that you've given your driver over the time that they have worked with you should have been stored somewhere in the form of GPS routes which the company can then transfer to the new driver.
