Can I Refuse Something Sent To Me Cod?

By:

Most methods of shipping are fairly straightforward. After you buy something, the company pays a courier company to transport the goods to you. You sign for them, and they are yours. However, if your fulfillment company chooses to ship something to you COD, this is a slightly more complicated situation. Unlike traditional shipping models, if something is sent to you COD, you are not going to have paid for it beforehand. There are also certain laws which come into play which you should know about if you are expecting anything to be shipped to you in this fashion.

The primary law that affects COD shipping is that customers always have the right to refuse to accept something that is shipped to them COD. This is basically a consumer protectionism law. It makes sure that companies can't misrepresent products and then hold customers accountable for paying for them. Therefore, if something is sent to you COD and you need to refuse it, you can.

There are some good reasons why a person should refuse something which is shipped to them COD. For instance, sometimes, after something is shipped, it may arrive damaged. It may also be shipped after having originally been defective in some way. In any case where you receive a damaged product, you would have very good reason for refusing a COD shipment.

Another good reason to not accept a COD shipment is if the package that arrives does not meet the description that was originally given to you when you purchased the product. This is exactly the kind of customer deception that this law was put in place to prevent. If you feel that the product was misrepresented to you when you ordered it, you should send it back. Also, if the product which arrives is not the correct model or does not have the specifications of the product you ordered, you should refuse the COD shipment on that basis as well.

Remember that just because you can refuse a COD shipment, doesn't mean that you should. The problem that emerged with COD shipping for many years is that customers ordered things without thinking about whether or not they really wanted, or could afford, them. Then, they ended up sending back vast amounts of COD shipments. COD is a convenience, and if you want a company to continue extending it to you, you should be sure that you only send back products if you have good reason for doing so.
