Can I Do My Own Landscape Lighting And Save Money?

By:

For any one that has shopped around to have a contractor install their landscape lighting they know the cost can be very expensive. Most systems average about $200 plus a light for professionally installed systems.

So can you do it yourself and save a good chunk of money? The answer is yes but you will have a few things to figure out before you try. For starters you will want to find a comparable quality product. The stuff they sell at Costco, Home Depot, or any of those stores is not really comparable to the quality and function of good landscape lighting.

The good stuff is sold directly to contractors or to your local landscape or sprinkler shops. An issue you will have is trying to get the product at a decent price. If you don't have a business that does landscape lighting they will often charge you close to retail to buy the parts. With retail often being over a $100 for each fixture and $500 for each transformer paying retail can be problem if your goal is to save some money.

If you can figure than one out you will need to understand how to wire a system correctly. There is something called constant drop that you will need to understand. If you don't your lamps on the end of your runs will burn out prematurely and that can be frustrating. Not to mention it won't look ideal. If you bump up the voltage to compensate that also leads to other problems.

Once you understand constant drop and what your limits are with low voltage landscape lighting then you are ready to go. You will want to have good water proof connections so your system will last for years to come.

The only other issue most do it your self homeowners underestimate is the amount of work it takes to hide all the wire in the ground. If you don't take the time to do this the right way then your system may look nice at night but will look like and unfinished project in the daylight.
So you can do your own lighting if you want. You just need a little ambition, and little time, and a little research to make sure you know what you are doing.
